The 1960s and 70s in Europe and even more so in the US were a time of protest music, of songs that not only had a strong message, but whose influence came to embody the countercultural voices of their generation. My name is Sa’ra Charismata (@saracharismata) and I am an artist dedicated to the revival of protest song in pop and alternative music in this dire time. In my mind music is probably the most powerful platform one can use to spread awareness. I am acutely aware that cultural change must necessarily precede political change and I am not afraid to sing truth to power. I am no longer a ‘SHEEP’.
My story begins with my parents fleeing the raging conflict in 1970s Eritrea in the horn of Africa and finding sanctuary in Sweden where I was born and raised. Since then I have devoted my adolescent years influencing challenging issues pertaining to racial, economic and gender inequalities through music and field activism, primarily in the US where I lived for 10 years.
I currently reside in Stockholm and part-time in Brooklyn, New York, where I am wrapping up the production of my debut EP. Drawing on the internet love for my debut single ‘Gold Digga’ in which I take aim at cultural greed and materialism, the new material promises to take on a host of pressing issues facing a youth trying to make sense of a seriously fractured society.
I just released my new single ‘Sheep (Let Me Go)’ this month, and the song is a call for collective reflection in the wake of national and global tragedies, with the insight that peace and equality can only be truly attained when those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who bear the brunt of social injustices. The new single confronts systemic violence and quite bluntly says ‘War is a business, we’re funding corporate interests.’
During my week as @sweden I will find new and interesting ways to bring light to social issues and let you in on some of the upcoming music I am working on. Together with you I look forward to meeting new people and ideas that make up Sweden in 2015!
