Måns Jonasson

was @sweden 2018-01-15 to 2018-01-22

Hello, I’m Måns Jonasson, usually @mansj on Twitter. I will spread the love for my home town of Stockholm, analogue synthesizers, neon signs and robots. Born and raised in our capital city, I have also spent a lot of time in my wife’s home state of Texas, USA.

I work with making the Swedish internet better on a daily basis, I take care of my two kids and try to fit in music, gaming and pinball in between.

@OroroPro London is perhaps not exactly a model city either, but it IS about 8 times the size of Stockholm so that makes sense, there.

@sweden Jan. 16, 2018, 10:58 a.m.

I, and many with me, instead want to build inwards, to build more housing in areas close to town, with access to public transportation.

@sweden Jan. 16, 2018, 10:56 a.m.

It's not uncommon in Stockholm to have commute times of 60+ minutes, even though the core city is quite small. This is sprawl.

@sweden Jan. 16, 2018, 10:55 a.m.

We are a nature-loving people, so a lot of Stockholmers want to save every tree in the vicinity of the city, and expand further out.

@sweden Jan. 16, 2018, 10:54 a.m.

As the city is now growing even more, there is a lot of debate on how we should expand Stockholm to make the city work for the future.

I had a band as a teenager which only released three cassettes. Recently, thanks to the internet, we've had a sort of come-back.

@sweden Jan. 16, 2018, 9:45 a.m.

Sweden seems to be more or less alone in the world with the name "synth" for the genre. Other countries say "industrial" or "electronic" etc

@sweden Jan. 16, 2018, 9:45 a.m.

In the late 80's and early 90's Sweden had a small, but very productive scene for electronic music. We call it "synth music" here.

@sweden Jan. 16, 2018, 8:38 a.m.

@MontagsOnFire I feel bad for anyone having to live in winter.

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 2:07 p.m.

@ok_jnr Bombardier, French manufacturer I believe.

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 2:07 p.m.

Wow, that was exciting. Live video of the most boring stretch in this town. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 2:06 p.m.

@GuSv01 Ja. Det dröjer väl dock.

Another view of winter in Stockholm. These kind of surroundings are the reasons we have such dark music and art.… https://t.co/5xwXKaasDR

@FredrickAven Also good. But not as good. 😎

@thorsten_flink @dekman Äsch, de låter ju mer DM än DM.

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 1:43 p.m.

Sweden's greatest synth act ever, The Mobile Homes, made this perfect track in 1991. Still great today. /M; https://t.co/1iM2x5KqWW

Let's do another one! Here's another great machine from our studio. Which one is it? #namethatsynth https://t.co/Xfa4mcGtaz

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 12:41 p.m.

Yes, and it is indeed brutal. The humidity in the gulf region makes it extra tough to weather. My brain just quits… https://t.co/b2RK4S4gfV

RT @heatheraudrey: @sweden Reminds me of Calvin & Hobbes. Could say the same for winter Sweden. https://t.co/DtoytEobfs

Let's forget about winter by watching a hilarious, clumsy interview with a baby-young Depeche Mode in SWE from 1982. https://t.co/6Tuyz5Y4GY

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:52 a.m.

So, some people here actually like winter. They claim that skiing and iceskating is "fun", and that you can "dress warm". BAH, HUMBUG. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:46 a.m.

I also hear some people are really into self-flagellation. /M; https://t.co/7cjA2qDRD4

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:42 a.m.

The one saving grace of Sweden this time of year is the Semla. I know you probably already know about this miracle. But still. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:38 a.m.

No. I need to get the hell out of here this time of year is what I need. /M; https://t.co/4eKuNMYolE

On the flip side though, this is a photo I took last summer, on one of our no-night nights. I miss summer. /M; https://t.co/xnqw5W5osu

@miss_speech It will happen, it's just a question of time! (Bonus points to me for added Depeche Mode reference!)

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:25 a.m.

Simply not building enough housing for many years to meet the increase in population. /M; https://t.co/LTztmdfzlD

@miss_speech Actually, pretty much all cities in TX are progressive. Loving these blue islands: https://t.co/MGMwVzozC1

I hear you. I have my doubts about going back, but we are planning to visit again this summer. If we dare. /M; https://t.co/46jwdO4lpc

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:17 a.m.

@ranceallen @hyresgasterna Nej, men jag visste att de hade nåt på gång. Skövlarsyntharen är tyvärr inte tillfrågad. ;)

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:16 a.m.

I've now taken to expressing my opinion about the whole process through music. Behold: Bygg Stad (build city) https://t.co/9kVg8psjPJ

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:15 a.m.

YIMBY = "Yes, in my back yard" so naturally, I'm for building. Many of my (mainly older) neighbors are against. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:15 a.m.

@Carly_B @smiffy True, but it would be the closest translation. "Skithål" said nobody, ever.

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:14 a.m.

The city has suggested a bunch of new apartment buildings on an empty field right next to my house. I am active in the Swedish YIMBY. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:14 a.m.

Since I love my town, I want more people to be able to enjoy it. Sadly, we are lacking housing something really awful. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:13 a.m.

So, synth destroyer. I love Stockholm. I was born here, lived here all my life and I plan to die here. I love this town. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:05 a.m.

Most likely not, I am way too peaceful. https://t.co/YhTYehPKxD

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:04 a.m.

It's dark, it's cold, it's depressing, and we all want to die. Many Swedes escape this s-hole of a climate for warmer lands this time. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 10:03 a.m.

So we are in the "ox weeks" now. This is the time between 12th day and Easter, and are so called because they drag on like oxen. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 9:59 a.m.

This week, I will invite you to follow me around Stockholm as I attempt to survive the natural disaster that is January in Sweden. /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 9:55 a.m.

But most of all, I love music. I have a small band where I write, produce and sing synth pop.

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 9:54 a.m.

Besides working, I have a lot of niche side activities. I am a maker, a computer nerd, a gamer, a pinball player, neon artist... /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 9:53 a.m.

In Sweden I am known as "Skövlarsyntharen", roughly translated as "Synth man, destroyer of forests". /M;

@sweden Jan. 15, 2018, 9:52 a.m.

Nice to meet you. My name is Måns, I am 43 years old, born and raised in Stockholm, married, and with two boys 10 and 13 years old. /M;
